FAQ

"Can I be married at St Mary's Church, Ferndown?"

If you are resident in the Parish of Ferndown and/or are regular worshippers at St Mary's then you are automatically eligible to apply to be married here. However, if you are resident outside of Ferndown and do not attend St Mary's then you may still be able to apply if you fulfil any of the following qualifying connections:

You have a qualifying connection with Ferndown parish if either of you:

  • was baptized in the parish

  • was confirmed in the parish

  • has at any time had your usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months

  • has at any time regularly attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months

Or if either of your parents, during your lifetime,

  • had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months

  • regularly attended public worship in the parish for at least 6 months.

Or if either of your parents or grandparents were married in the parish.

If you do not have any of these connections but would still like to be married at St Mary's
then please contact us on 01202 897087 or email and we will do all we can to assist you.

"I am getting married in another church but I live in the Parish of St Mary's Church, Ferndown.
How do I arrange for my banns to be read?"

If either of you live in Ferndown Parish but are getting married at a different church you are required by law to have your banns read in both churches (unless you are being married by licence). If you are not sure which parish you come under click here to access the "A Church Near You" website - simply type in your postcode and it will tell you your parish of residence.

To arrange for your banns to be read click here to download a banns application form

Please complete this and return it with a cheque made payable to "PCC Ferndown" for £48 to St Mary's Church Office, Church Rd, Ferndown. BH22 9EU

We will then be in touch to let you know when your banns will be read, this will happen over the course of three Sundays. Afterwards, provided that no impediment has been alleged, we will provide you with a banns certificate which you should then give to the minister taking your wedding.

Do you provide marriage preparation?

Yes, we hold a Marriage Preparation Day every year, normally on the 2nd Saturday of February. If you are booked to be married at St Mary's or All Saints we will ask you to make every effort to attend this Marriage Preparation Day. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow wedding couples to share ideas and to enjoy some fabulous food and drink whilst our clergy help you to prepare not only for your wedding but also for married life together. All our previous wedding couples found the day helpful and enjoyable.

"What if I am divorced and/or have children from a previous relationship?"

All marriage applications are considered on an individual basis. A member of our clergy team will be in touch to talk with you.

"What if one of us is a foreign national?"

If you are from outside the European Economic Area, having a Church of England wedding will involve some different paperwork and there will be a number of things the Vicar will want to talk to you about.
